Support our School

Fairborn Digital Academy is in need of a new building.

Fairborn Digital Academy only receives $25.00 per student for facilities, and since we are not able to put bonds or levies on the ballot, we are needing to ask for donations to pay for the new tutoring facilities necessary to run the great programs we offer at Fairborn Digital Academy.

Originally, when Fairborn Digital Academy was created, the Executive Director worked out of an office at the Fairborn City Schools Board of Education. The computers were repaired and reformatted in a space within the FCS annex building. Students came to the FCS board building for orientation and to take their state-mandated tests. As FDA began to grow, the move to a bigger space became necessary. In 2004, the Fairborn Digital Academy moved into the building at 700 Black Lane, previously used as Black Lane Elementary. With the bigger building, it was easier to have the necessary space to perform all the day-to-day tasks required to run a school. FCS has begun to build all new buildings within the district. As part of that plan, the Black Lane building has been scheduled for demolition. This means FDA will be needing to move to a new location to continue providing the support necessary to helping students find success in their education.

Fairborn Digital Academy needs your support to continue providing quality education to our students. Please consider donating today via the options listed, and be sure to include “Fairborn Digital Academy” in the “Specific Donation” box or memo field on checks.

We started our FIRST program, where students come into our facility to receive personalized tutoring, in 2006. Using data from the previous school year, FDA placed the lowest-performing students into this program. These students soon became some of the best performing students in our school. We copied this program with a second group of students and then a third, and we now have eight classrooms of students who come into our building on a semi-regular basis for small group remediation. Seeing the students and working closely with them in person, we build strong relationships with our students. The majority of students enrolled in FDA are at risk of dropping out of high school and the bond formed between the students and staff is a significant factor in our success.

Due to the flexibility of being an online school, Fairborn Digital Academy has the largest population of parenting students in Greene County. Students who have children can stay home with babies and still have access to all their academic needs. FDA has partnered with the Greene County Career Center to use their GRADS class to help teach these students how to care for their children. Moms and dads can enroll in the class as soon as they discover they are pregnant. Each year, the parents receive a curriculum based on the age of their child. The FDA, GCCC, and Fairborn High School also co-created a “store” called “Kiddie Kingdom,” where students can get clothes and toys donated from the community. When their child outgrows the items they have received from the store, they can return them and get new items. Hopefully, through this program, the babies will be able to get a running start on becoming successful later in life.

Help us continue to help our community.

The art program has been the most successful incentive program in our school. If a student is completing their work, they are allowed to go to the art room. Led by the School Pride Officer, the students paint murals on the school walls, learn basket weaving, sculpt with clay, and many other activities. We teach students how to use art as a positive outlet for their emotions by creating art that is aesthetically beautiful and contains meaning.

We started an “Apprentice Master Gardener” program in 2017 in partnership with the Greene County OSU Extension Master Gardeners. Students in this program learn how to grow crops and incorporate the fruits and vegetables into food they can cook at home. About 75% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch. By teaching students how to grow food, we are starting the process of helping to break our students out of the cycle of poverty. This program can only happen if we have a building where we can grow produce, cook our food, and have classrooms to teach our students about budgeting and leadership.

When students are in the building, they enjoy the opportunity to interact with each other. In our Black Lane building, the students had access to the gym where they played basketball, tossed footballs, or kicked soccer balls. These peer interactions are valuable for the establishment of relationships among the students and the staff. Of course, having a gym also creates an area for students to earn their PE credit. Having a gym has also helped provide an outlet for upset students to find a positive way to handle their emotions.

Helping students with their social-emotional needs is fundamental to the work we do at Fairborn Digital Academy. We work with each student and their family to find the root causes of their difficulties in school and attempt to address those causes. Having a building where we can interact with our students regularly helps create a sense of belonging, leading to our success. Students who have said they never felt comfortable in their previous schools tell us the environment we build within our staff and building has allowed students to re-engage, achieve academic success, and alleviate distractions.
